(This blog explains my routine when packing for a vacation)

Packing for a vacation can feel like Tetris—balancing convenience, efficiency, and preparedness while avoiding overpacking. Whether you're heading on a weekend getaway or an extended trip abroad, having a streamlined packing routine ensures a smooth travel experience. Here are some essential tips and tricks to make your packing process hassle-free.

Traveling Packing Checklist
Traveling Packing Checklist

1. Plan-Ahead with a Checklist

Before you start tossing items into your suitcase, take a few minutes to create a checklist. Tailor your list to your destination, weather conditions, and planned activities. Break it down into categories:

• Clothing: Everyday outfits, formal wear, sleepwear, shoes

• Toiletries: Travel-sized essentials, skincare, haircare, Lotion, Sunscreen

• Electronics: Phone, chargers, adapters, headphones

• Documents: Passport, ID, travel tickets, itinerary

• Miscellaneous: Snacks, first aid kit, sunglasses, reusable water bottle, Medications (Headaches, Nausea, Stomach Issues, Aloe Vera)

Lay out your Items and check them off one by one but make sure you double check!

2. Choose Versatile Clothing

Pack items that you can mix and match to create multiple outfits. Neutral-colored clothing and layers allow you to dress appropriately for changing weather. I go for lightweight, breathable fabrics that don’t take up much space and dry quickly. I also write a list of how many double items of clothing I need to pack and check them off as soon as I have packed them. I also bring triple socks and underwear just in case for my age. If you know what I mean…

ALWAYS CHECK THE WEATHER!!! Even the day you leave check the weather.

3. Master the Art of Rolling (Military Style)

Rolling your clothes instead of folding them minimizes wrinkles and saves space. Packing cubes help keep your suitcase organized and make it easier to find items without creating a mess. Rolling socks, shirts, pants, dresses, and shorts will save you more space to later bring home some souvenirs from your vacation.

4. Utilize the "Rule of Three"

For a short trip, aim to bring three tops, three bottoms, and three pairs of shoes—this combination gives you multiple outfit variations without overpacking. Adjust accordingly for longer trips. That is what you’re supposed to do, I do not agree with this “Rule of Three.” I must have extra specific Items just in case my feet, socks, and shoes get wet, I end up getting dirty because I always end up either in the sand, mud, jungle, or in some type of waters.

Being in the Military they teach you start packing only bring what you can carry. I have been on trips and missions where I was not fully prepared for what was to come. I learned a lot from those mistakes, and I try to have everything I need to survive, accidents, and if you don’t want to pay an arm and leg for a T-Shirt or shoes while you’re on vacation. You know they raise those tourist prices because we can be desperate sometimes.

5. Save Space with Dual-Purpose Items

Multi-functional items such as a scarf that doubles as a blanket, a jacket with hidden storage pockets, or sneakers suitable for both casual outings and workouts can reduce the number of things you need to bring. I also use vaccumed sealed packing bags.

6. Optimize Your Toiletries

Instead of carrying full-size bottles, opt for travel-size products or use refillable containers. Solid toiletries like shampoo bars or dry toothpaste tablets help reduce bulk and comply with airline liquid restrictions.

7. Keep Electronics and Essentials Handy

Store important electronics and travel documents in a carry-on bag or personal item for quick access. Packing a portable charger is a lifesaver for long trips when outlets might not be available.

8. Pack Smart for Security & Emergencies

• Keep valuables like cash, jewelry, and sensitive documents in a secure inner pocket or anti-theft bag.

• Bring a small first aid kit with basics like band-aids, pain relievers, and motion sickness medicine.

• Scan copies of your ID and important travel documents and store them digitally for backup.

DO NOT EVER LOSE YOUR ID or any important documents you bring with you on vacation.

9. Leave Room for Souvenirs

If you love shopping while traveling, pack lightly and roll your clothes so you have room to bring back gifts or keepsakes. Consider expandable luggage to accommodate unexpected purchases.

10. Do a Final Run-Through

Once packed, take a step back and reevaluate what’s in your bag. Remove anything unnecessary, ensuring you travel as light as possible. Before I add these items, I like to lay them out on my bed and go over all items one last time.

With these tips and tricks, packing for your next adventure will be stress-free and efficient. Enjoy your trip with confidence, knowing that you’ve packed smartly and thoughtfully!
